I love how fun she is when teaching, and how she explains things so well with great enthusiasm. One of my most memorable experiences was taking the HSK exam for the first time and feeling so nervous, but everyone was very welcoming and never made fun of mistakes. Agnes Laoshi was very enthusiastic and always gave students opportunities to speak, gently correcting us in a soft and easy tone. She makes sure everyone understands the meaning and never teaches too fast. One memorable moment was learning the word “nǚ’ér” (daughter). She patiently corrected me because saying it wrong would change the meaning completely! We also tried singing the Rasa Sayang song using numbers, which was hilarious since we were out of tune, but thankfully we got it right in the end. I’m able to understand simple Mandarin conversations when speakers talk slowly, which is amazing for me as a CIC level student since I rarely get to speak Mandarin every day. I’m proud of my progress, now I can relate some words I learned while watching dramas, even if I sometimes struggle with tones. Agnes Laoshi, xie xie nin for everything from start to finish. You always give students the chance to try, stay patient, and keep the class motivated, even when the energy is low at first. Thanks to you, the class always ends up lively and fun!

I’m really glad to get to know Bunga Laoshi. Her teaching is fun, and I can understand the lessons much better, xiexie! I can now speak a bit of Mandarin with my friends and understand some of the way native speakers talk. Learning at Kunkwan has also helped me enjoy Chinese dramas more, as I can now watch some without relying too much on subtitles.
