One of my most memorable experiences was sitting for an exam alongside much younger students. Even though we were at different stages of life, the nervousness felt just like my university days. I picked up Mandarin as a way to stay busy, reading and learning new words, and it also makes it easier to connect with my Chinese friends, even though I still have a long way to go. Learning Mandarin isn’t easy, but it’s very rewarding. I learn new words and sentences each week, and I’m excited for the day I can understand and speak it well, making conversations much more fun. Learning Mandarin with MinQi Laoshi has been interactive, fun, and very supportive. I’m really glad to get to know Bunga Laoshi. Her teaching is fun, and I can understand the lessons much better, xiexie! I can now speak a bit of Mandarin with my friends and understand some of the way native speakers talk. Learning at Kunkwan has also helped me enjoy Chinese dramas more, as I can now watch some without relying too much on subtitles. I love how the module is arranged at a pace I can follow. Even with a busy work week, I can slot in this once-a-week 2-hour class, which makes me very happy. My first assignment with a native Mandarin speaker in Level A was memorable. I asked a colleague to be my partner, and she said my pronunciation was surprisingly good! I’m still a beginner and cannot speak or understand Mandarin fully yet, but I believe I’ll be able to once I complete the course. Learning Mandarin has opened me up to a new world and made me appreciate why Chinese speakers sometimes make mistakes in Malay. I now feel encouraged to make mistakes in Mandarin too as part of learning. Initially, I didn’t know what to expect, and thought online classrooms might feel quiet, but thanks to friendly Ika lǎoshī, we quickly opened up. The teaching pace was just right, and we had so much fun in the bargaining role-play. Even when I forgot a line, I could improvise, and Ika lǎoshī was patient and supportive. Agnes lǎoshī’s pronunciation is very clear, and she helped us pronounce Mandarin words properly. I always found Mandarin pronunciation complex and difficult, but she made it easier and fun. I loved singing during class, which also helped us pronounce words faster. I can now understand basic conversations and a few lines from Mandarin TV dramas, and I hope to visit my friend in Beijing someday.
